"We immigrated to the US in 1984. I only brought two things with me – an acoustic guitar from my father, Fender of course, and the stamp collection that he and I worked on.
On a whim I took some of my UK stamps and made a guitar out of it. People liked it so much I kept picking other countries and
the more countries I picked, the more interest grew in the collection so I decided, somewhat whimsically, I would do every country in the world.
I wanted to work on this with my daughter, Rose Mooney, so I asked her to design a neckplate that symbolized peace. I thought she’d go with the traditional dove iconography, but she picked a very simple flower graphic, which is the neckplate on all 195 country guitars.
It takes on average 100 stamps per guitar, so there are about 20,000 stamps used to develop the collection. They’re all Telecasters, all the same color, same pickups, and they’re all tonally functional, playable guitars.
People have asked me,’ what do you want to call the collection?’ And the best word I can come up with is the IMAGINE COLLECTION, just based on John Lennon’s dream. I’d love if 25 years from now, for everybody who owns one of these to get together, shake hands. Not be at war with each other. That would be a dream come true.”
